Sofa won't fit through the door? What to try, in order

Quick answer

Measure the door's clear opening first, then try the sofa three ways: upright, on its back, and tilted on its end. Furniture retailers such as Pottery Barn and La-Z-Boy Southeast say a piece can go through when its depth, its height or its diagonal depth is less than the door's width. If none of the three fits, take off the legs and the door before you try anything else.

Why the sofa gets stuck

A sofa is longer than any door is wide, so the length never decides the fit. What decides it is the smallest side you can turn toward the opening: the depth, the height, or the diagonal depth when the sofa is tilted on its end. Pottery Barn and La-Z-Boy Southeast both give that rule.

Three things catch people out. The opening is narrower than the door, because the open door and the stops take up room. The tightest spot is often a hall turn, a stair or an elevator, not the front door. And the height on a product page can include the legs.

What to try, in order

  1. Measure the clear opening

Open the door all the way. Measure from the face of the open door to the doorstop on the other side, and write it on the fit sheet.

  2. Find the narrowest point

Walk the path from the truck to the room. Measure every door, hall, stair and elevator; the smallest number is the one that counts.

  3. Try upright, on its back, then on its end

Compare the depth, then the height, then the diagonal depth with the clear width. If any one of them is smaller, there is a way through.

  4. Take off the legs and cushions

If the maker's assembly sheet shows the legs come off, unscrew them, and lift out loose cushions. Measure the sofa again without them.

  5. Take the door off its hinges

With the door out of the way, the opening runs from stop to stop. Measure it again before anyone lifts anything.

  6. Try another way in

A back door, a patio door or the garage may be wider. Measure each one the same way.

When nothing fits

  • Measure from the product page and run the check before the delivery day, while the order can still change.
  • Ask whether the sofa comes apart. Some ship with arms or backs that come off, or in boxes small enough for any door.
  • Give the delivery crew the numbers on your fit sheet, and ask whether they take doors off or try other angles.
  • Keep the fit sheet. With every door and hall on it, it works for the next mattress, desk or dresser too.

Stairs count as doors

Pottery Barn's guide treats a staircase like a doorway: its width is the narrowest point between the rail and the wall, and its height is the lowest headroom over the steps.

Checklist to print

Tick these off before the delivery is booked:

  • Sofa length, depth, height and diagonal depth from the product page
  • Clear width of every door on the path, measured with the door open
  • Hall widths at each turn, and the ceiling height there
  • Stair width and the lowest headroom, if there are stairs
  • Elevator door width and inside depth, if there is an elevator
  • Whether the legs come off, and the tool to take them off
  • Door hinges checked, in case a door has to come off
  • A second way in measured, just in case

Tips and tricks

  • Tip 01

    Wrap the arms first

A moving blanket or stretch wrap on the arms protects both the sofa and the door frame while you try angles.

  • Tip 02

    Try the hinge side

Taking the door off its hinges and removing the stops gains width at the frame. Do it before you try forcing an angle.

  • Tip 03

Let one person call the moves

Pivoting in a hall goes better when only one voice says turn or stop.

  • Tip 04

Look at a window or patio door

A sliding patio door with the panel lifted out can be the widest opening in the house.

  • Tip 05

Ask about returns before you order

Some stores charge a restocking fee if a piece cannot get in. Read the policy first.

What we would do

Try the three angles, then take the legs and door off

Run the fit check, then try upright, on the back and on end, in that order. If none clears, unscrew the legs and lift the door off its hinges. If it still will not go, call the store about returns or a furniture disassembly service rather than forcing it through.

Questions

How do I know if a couch will fit through my door?

Compare its depth, height and diagonal depth with the door's clear width. If any one of the three is smaller, Pottery Barn and La-Z-Boy Southeast say it can go through, tilted if needed.

Will a 36 inch deep sofa fit through a 32 inch door?

Not upright, because 36 is more than 32. It can still go through on its back if its height is under the clear width, or on its end if its diagonal depth is.

How much room does taking the door off give?

It gives back whatever the open door takes up, which depends on the door's thickness and hinges. Measure the opening between the stops once the door is off.

What is diagonal depth?

The distance from the bottom back corner of the sofa to a straight edge laid from the top of the back to the front of the arm. It tells you whether the sofa can go through tilted on its end.
