No size printed on my air filter: how to find it

Quick answer

Measure the slot the filter came out of: short side, long side and depth, to the tenth of an inch. Round each number to the nearest whole inch and you have the nominal size to order, written like 16x25x1. Filterbuy says to measure the slot rather than the old filter, because a filter that has sat there all season bows and measures short. If a number lands on a true fraction such as 22.25, the slot is a custom size.

Look for the size before you measure

Often the print is only worn, and part of it can still be read. Filterbuy says most frames carry two sizes: the nominal size in large type, which is the one you order, and the actual size in smaller type. Turn the old filter over and check all four edges before you reach for the tape.

  • All four edges of the frame, front and back. The small print can survive when the big print has rubbed off.
  • The box or bag the last filter came in, or a past order in your email.
  • Your home records binder, if you kept one, or a note on the duct next to the slot.
  • Every other return grille in the house. If two grilles look the same, their filters may be the same size, but measure to be sure.

Measure the slot, step by step

  1. Switch the system off

Set the thermostat to off before you pull the filter, so the blower doesn't draw dust into the unit.

  2. Photograph the old filter

Take a photo that shows the airflow arrow, so the new one goes in the same way.

  3. Measure the opening

Measure the short side and the long side edge to edge across the opening, to the tenth of an inch. The grille frame around it is always larger, so leave that out.

  4. Measure the depth

Measure how far the slot runs front to back. This is the number people skip, and it decides whether a filter fits at all.

  5. Write it in order

Write the three numbers as short side x long side x depth, then round each one as shown below.

Round it, or order a custom size

Filterbuy's rule: if a measurement is within about a quarter inch of a whole number, that whole number is your nominal size. A slot at 19.9 or 20.1 inches takes a 20. The filter itself is cut half an inch under, which leaves about a quarter inch of clearance on each side.

Fig. 2A slot within about a quarter inch of a whole number takes that number. A true fraction means a custom filter.

A true fraction is a custom slot

If a side lands on something like 17.5, 22.25 or 23.75 inches, rounding either way costs you. Round down and air slips past the gap; round up and the filter won't seat. Order a custom filter to the exact measured figure, and don't trim a standard filter to fit.

If the old filter is still flat

A flat, unbent old filter can be measured too. Filterbuy cuts length and width half an inch under the nominal size and a 1-inch filter to 0.75 inch deep, so add 0.5 inch to the length and width and round. Other brands cut a little differently: Filterbuy lists a Filtrete 20x25x1 at 19.68 x 24.68 x 0.81 inches. Both round to the same 20x25x1. If the filter is bowed, measure the slot instead.

Check for a second filter

Filterbuy says larger homes often have more than one filter. Filters sit on the return side: behind a return grille, in a slot on the furnace or air handler, or in a media cabinet in the ductwork. With the system running, a return grille pulls air in and a supply vent blows it out. Measure each return slot you find, because two slots in one house can take different sizes.

Write it down this time

Once you have the size, write it on the duct next to the slot with a marker and add a row to the filter size record. Next time the frame fades, you won't need the tape measure.

Checklist to print

Work down the list at the slot:

  • All four edges of the old frame checked for print
  • Old box, bag or order email checked
  • Thermostat set to off
  • Photo of the old filter's airflow arrow
  • Short side of the opening measured, to the tenth
  • Long side of the opening measured, not the grille frame
  • Depth of the slot measured front to back
  • Each number rounded, or marked custom if it is a true fraction
  • Every return grille checked for a second filter
  • Size written on the duct and on the record sheet

Tips and tricks

  • Tip 01

Measure to the tenth, not the eighth

A reading in tenths shows at a glance whether you are near a whole number or sitting on a fraction.

  • Tip 02

Depth is the one to double-check

Filterbuy names depth as the size it sees ordered wrong most often. A 1-inch slot won't take a 4-inch filter.

  • Tip 03

    Feel for gaps after fitting

Run a hand round the edges of the new filter with the system on. Moving air at the edge means a gap.

  • Tip 04

Buy one before you buy a case

Test the fit of a single filter first, then order the multipack in the same size.

  • Tip 05

    Ignore the furnace brand

Filterbuy says the slot sets the size, not the brand: two homes with the same model can take different filters.

What we would do

Measure the slot, round, then test one

Check the frame edges and the old box first. If the size is gone, measure the empty slot in tenths of an inch, round each number, and buy a single filter to check the fit. If a side lands on a true fraction, order a custom size to the exact figure. Then write the size on the duct so you never have to measure again.

Questions

How do I find my air filter size if nothing is printed on it?

Measure the slot the filter came from: short side, long side and depth. Round each number to the nearest whole inch and order that nominal size.

Source: Filterbuy, How to Measure Your Air Filter, checked October 9, 2026.

Should I measure the old filter or the slot?

The slot, if the old filter is bowed or missing. Filterbuy says a filter that has sat in place all season usually bows and reads short. A flat old filter works too: add half an inch to the length and width, then round.

My slot measures 20.1 by 25.2 inches. What do I order?

Both numbers are within a quarter inch of a whole number, so round them: a 20x25 at whatever depth the slot measures.

Source: Filterbuy, How to Measure Your Air Filter, checked October 9, 2026.

What if my measurement is halfway between two sizes?

A true fraction like 17.5 or 22.25 inches means a custom slot. Filterbuy says rounding either way costs the seal, so order a custom filter to the exact figure.

Source: Filterbuy, How to Measure Your Air Filter, checked October 9, 2026.

Can I look up the filter size from my furnace model number?

Not reliably. Filterbuy says the slot decides the size, not the brand, and two homes with the same model can need different filters. Measure the slot.
