Guest room checklist: a spare room ready for holiday guests

Quick answer

Split it into three passes. A week out, check the bed fits with a walkway of about 24 in beside it, clear the floor and empty a drawer. The day before, make the bed, set out towels, write the Wi-Fi card and press the test button on the nearest smoke alarm, as NFPA advises doing monthly. In the last hour, open the window, turn on a lamp and walk the room as if you were the guest.

Why three passes

Most guest rooms do another job the rest of the year: office, storage, workout room. Clearing one out on the morning guests arrive is how the laundry pile ends up in your closet and the air mattress turns out to have a slow leak. Splitting the work into three passes gives every slow job time.

A week out: space and bed

  1. Measure the bed space

Check the bed, or the air mattress, against the room with a walkway of about 24 in beside it and 36 in at the foot. If it's tight, put one side against the wall.

  2. Clear the floor

Move out what doesn't belong: the exercise bike, the box of tax papers, the drying rack. A suitcase needs floor space too.

  3. Empty a drawer and some closet space

One empty drawer and a few free hangers let a guest unpack instead of living out of a bag.

  4. Test the air mattress

If you're using one, inflate it now and leave it overnight. New vinyl stretches in its first uses, so you'll know whether it's a stretch or a leak before the visit.

The day before: bed and small things

  1. Make the bed

Clean sheets, a spare blanket folded at the foot and a second pillow. On an air mattress, use a fitted sheet as deep as the bed.

  2. Set out towels

A bath towel and a hand towel per guest, on the bed or a chair, so nobody has to ask.

  3. Write the house card

Wi-Fi name and password, which bathroom to use, how the shower works, and the alarm code if you have one. Fold it on the nightstand.

  4. Press the smoke alarm test button

NFPA says to test smoke alarms at least once a month with the test button. Press the one nearest the guest room, If it stays quiet, change the battery before the guests arrive.

Fig. 2Walk the room the way a guest will: door, bag, bed, lamp, outlet, and the path to the bathroom in the dark.
  • Open the door all the way. Nothing behind it, nothing in its swing.
  • Put a bag down. There's a clear spot for a suitcase that isn't the bed.
  • Lie on the bed. A lamp or switch is within reach, and so is an outlet for a phone charger.
  • Turn the lights off. A night light shows the way to the bathroom.
  • Open the window for ten minutes if the room has been shut up, then close it and set the heat.
  • Clear one spot on the nightstand: water glass, the house card, glasses.

Write the room down once

Put the room size, the bed or air mattress size and the walkway on the bed measuring sheet. Next year, the week-out pass takes five minutes.

Tips and tricks

  • Tip 01

    Sleep in it yourself

One night in the guest bed shows you the draft, the streetlight and the creaky board faster than any list.

  • Tip 02

    Keep a guest box

A small box in the closet with spare sheets, the house card, a night light, a phone charger and a power strip. Next time, the day-before pass is mostly done.

  • Tip 03

    Label the light switches

If one switch works the outlet and not the ceiling light, say so on the house card. Guests won't guess it.

  • Tip 04

    Clear the bathroom counter too

Empty one shelf or a corner of the counter so guests have somewhere to put their things.

  • Tip 05

Say which part of the closet is free

If the closet holds your own things, tell guests which end is theirs. Most won't open it otherwise.

What we would do

Start the week-out pass this weekend

The bed space and the cleared floor are the jobs that go wrong on the day. Do them on the weekend before the visit, test the air mattress overnight if you use one, and keep the day-before pass for sheets, towels and the house card. Write the room down on the bed sheet so next time is quicker.

Questions

What should be in a guest room?

A bed with clean sheets and a spare blanket, towels, a lamp within reach of the bed, an outlet for a charger, a spot for a suitcase, an empty drawer or a few hangers, a night light and a card with the Wi-Fi password.

How far ahead should I get the guest room ready?

Start about a week out with the slow jobs: checking the bed fits, clearing the floor and testing an air mattress. Leave sheets, towels and the house card for the day before.

How much space should be around a guest bed?

Casper suggests about 24 in of walkway on each side and 36 in at the foot. In a small room, put one side against the wall and keep the other walkway.

Should I test the smoke alarm before guests come?

NFPA says to test smoke alarms at least once a month with the test button, so the day before a visit is a good time to do this month's test.

The guest room is also my office. What do I put away?

Clear the floor for a suitcase, free one drawer and a few hangers, and clear the desk top so it can be a nightstand. Papers you don't want seen go in a closed box.
