Chapter 03Fit ยท Tool and printable record

Which bed fits the room, and will it get in?

Quick answer

Add about 24 in of walkway on each side to the bed's width, and about 36 in at the foot to its length. Those are Casper's walkway figures. If the room is at least that big both ways, the bed fits. A queen mattress is 60 by 80 in, so on a frame that adds 2 in it needs 110 in across and 118 in along. In a 10 by 10 ft room that leaves 10 in and 2 in to spare. A king does not fit.

Walkways used: 24 in beside the bed and 36 in at the foot. A mattress bends; a box spring and bed rails do not, so the path check uses the box spring.

How to use this, in plain words

  1. Measure the room wall to wall both ways, at floor level. Skip the baseboard bumps and write the smaller number if the walls are not square.

  2. Pick the wall for the headboard. It should not have the door or a window you need to reach on it.

  3. Check what the frame adds. The product page lists the frame's outside size; take away the mattress size to get the extra.

  4. Type the room in feet and the frame extra in inches. The tool lists every bed size with the room left over.

  5. For delivery, add the box spring's thickness, the narrowest door and the hall turn. The tool checks it on its edge and on its end.

Before you start

  • Note 01

The frame is bigger than the mattress

Headboards, footboards and side rails add inches. A bed frame for a queen is wider and longer than the queen mattress on it, so measure the frame.

  • Note 02

    Mark it on the floor

Casper suggests taping the bed's outline on the floor. Walk around it, open the closet and the door, and see how it feels before you buy.

  • Note 03

    Check the door swing

A door that opens into the room needs its own clear arc. Count it as a walkway that cannot have the bed in it.

  • Note 04

Measure the path before you order

Casper's guide says to measure hallways, door widths and stair clearances first. A mattress bends, so box springs and headboards are the pieces that get stuck.

How it works

  1. Bed footprint: the mattress width and length plus whatever the frame or headboard adds.
  2. Across the room: bed width plus a walkway of about 24 in on each side (or one side, if the bed is pushed against a wall). Along the room: bed length plus about 36 in at the foot.
  3. The tool tries the head of the bed on each wall and keeps the turn with the most room to spare.
  4. Getting it in: a box spring is rigid, so carried on its edge its thickness has to be less than the door's clear width. At a hall turn, the longest piece of that thickness that can turn the corner is the smallest value of a รท sin ฮธ + b รท cos ฮธ โˆ’ t รท (sin ฮธ ร— cos ฮธ), the same corner math as the sofa fit check.
  5. If the long edge will not turn, stand the box spring on its end: its width has to fit under the same limit and its length under the ceiling.

Worked example

A 10 by 10 ft guest room and a queen bed on a frame that adds 2 in each way, with walkways on both sides. The queen box spring is 9 in thick. It comes through a bedroom door with a 30 by 80 in clear opening, after a 36 in hall turns into another 36 in hall under an 8 ft (96 in) ceiling.

  1. Room: 10 ft by 10 ft, which is 120 in by 120 in. The frame adds 2 in each way.
  2. Queen on its frame: 62 in wide and 82 in long. Across the room it needs 62 + 24 + 24 = 110 in, leaving 10 in. Along the room it needs 82 + 36 = 118 in, leaving 2 in.
  3. King on the same frame is 78 in wide, so it needs 126 in across a 120 in room. That is 6 in short. The queen is the largest bed that fits.
  4. The queen box spring is 60 by 80 in and 9 in thick. On its edge it goes through the 30 in door with 21 in to spare.
  5. At the turn from a 36 in hall into a 36 in hall, the longest 9 in thick piece that turns is 83.8 in. The 80 in box spring goes around it long edge down with 3.8 in to spare.
Plan view: 10 by 10 ft room (120 x 120 in) Queen on frame 62 x 82 in 24 in 24 in 36 in Needs 110 in across and 118 in along Spare: 10 in across, 2 in at the foot Plan view: the hall turn 36 in 36 in box spring on its edge, 9 in thick, 80 in long Longest 9 in piece that turns: 83.8 in 80 in box spring clears it by 3.8 in

If the answer surprises you

The store says the room is big enough

Minimum room sizes on mattress sites allow less walkway than this tool does. A queen can go in a smaller room if you accept one tight side, so look at the spare inches and decide.

The box spring fails but the mattress got in

The mattress bends; the box spring is a stiff board. Split box springs and platform frames solve this, and the check shows how close it was.

King fails, California king passes

The two are not the same shape. A California king is narrower and longer, so in a long, narrow room it can fit where a king does not.

What to record

Keep the room and path numbers for the guest room, the next bed and delivery day. The printable sheet has a row for each room and each door on the way in:

  • Room name with its length and width, wall to wall
  • Where the door, closet and window sit, and which wall takes the headboard
  • Bed size, mattress size and what the frame adds
  • Walkway left beside the bed and at the foot
  • Narrowest door on the way in, clear width and height
  • Hall widths at each turn and the ceiling height there
  • Date measured and notes (split box spring, door off, rail)

Variants

Variant 01

Bed pushed against a wall

A guest bed or a kid's bed often goes against a wall, with one walkway only. Switch the walkways to one side and the bed needs 24 in less across the room.

Variant 02

Full sizes differ by an inch

Casper lists a full as 53 in wide and BEDGEAR as 54 in. The tool uses the wider figure, so a full that fits here fits either way.

Variant 03

Air mattress or daybed

Find its size on the box or product page. If it matches a standard size, read that row. If it is bigger, put the difference in the frame box. It needs the same walkways as a bed.

Numbers this tool uses

Limitations

  • Planning estimate; check the manufacturer's dimensions for your mattress and frame and measure the room and every door on the path yourself.
  • The walkway figures are a comfort guide, not a rule. Rooms where the door swings in, or a dresser opens toward the bed, need more room than the tool counts.
  • The path check treats the box spring as a flat board carried level or stood on end. Stairs, rails and light fixtures are not part of it; measure them as extra doors.

Tips and tricks

  • Tip 01

Use painter's tape for the outline

Tape the frame's outside size, not the mattress size, on the floor. Leave it down for a day and walk the room as a guest would.

  • Tip 02

Measure at the height of the furniture

A radiator, a window sill or a deep baseboard can steal inches at bed height that a floor tape misses.

  • Tip 03

Ask for the frame's outside size

Product pages often give only the mattress size. The outside size of the frame, with the headboard, is the number that matters.

  • Tip 04

Write the box spring thickness on the sheet

It is the number the delivery crew needs at the stairs, and it is easy to find on the label before the bed goes in.

What we would do

For a small guest room, a full or a queen against one wall

Run the room with walkways on both sides first. If only a full fits, try one side against the wall: a queen often fits then, and guests rarely need to get in from both sides. Measure the path the same day, and if the box spring is the tight piece, pick a split one before you order.

Questions

Will a queen bed fit in a 10x10 room?

Yes, with little to spare. A queen is 60 by 80 in. With 24 in of walkway on both sides and 36 in at the foot it needs 108 by 116 in of floor, and a 10 by 10 ft room is 120 by 120 in. Casper also names 10 by 10 ft as the smallest room for a queen.

What are the standard mattress sizes in inches?

Twin 38 by 75, twin XL 38 by 80, full 54 by 75, queen 60 by 80, king 76 by 80 and California king 72 by 84. Some brands make a full 53 in wide.

How much space should be around a bed?

Casper suggests about 24 in of walkway on each side and about 36 in at the foot, so drawers, doors and nightstands still work.

Source: Casper mattress size guide, checked October 7, 2026.

Why won't the box spring go up the stairs when the mattress did?

A mattress bends around a tight turn and a box spring does not. If the check says the box spring will not turn, look for a split box spring (two halves) or a platform frame that needs none, and run the check again with the smaller piece.

King or California king for a long, narrow room?

A California king is 4 in narrower and 4 in longer than a king. In a narrow room that 4 in across can be the difference, so run both through the tool.
