Will the air mattress fit? Floor space for a guest bed

Quick answer

Measure the clear patch of floor, not the room. A queen air mattress from Intex is 60 by 80 in and a twin is 39 by 75 in. Add Casper's walkways: about 24 in on each open side and 36 in at the foot. With one long side against a wall, a queen needs about 84 by 116 in of clear floor and a twin about 63 by 111 in. If the patch is smaller, try the twin, or move a chair out for the week.

Measure the floor you can use

An air mattress usually goes where furniture already is: a home office, a den, the end of a living room. So the room size on the floor plan doesn't help much. What counts is the clear rectangle left once the desk, chair and coffee table stay where they are.

  1. Pick the spot

Choose a patch with a wall on one long side and no door swinging across it. A wall keeps the mattress from sliding.

  2. Measure it both ways

Run the tape from wall to the nearest piece of furniture, then along the wall. Write down the smaller number if the patch narrows.

  3. Check the door and the path out

Open the room door all the way. If it hits where the mattress will lie, the patch is smaller than you measured.

  4. Run it through the bed check

Type the patch into the bed size tool as the room, set walkways to one side and read the queen and twin rows.

Air mattress sizes, and how much floor each needs

Air mattresses come in bed sizes but don't always match them to the inch. On Intex's product pages, a queen is 60 by 80 in, the same as a queen mattress. Its twin is 39 by 75 in, an inch wider than Casper's twin.

Casper suggests about 24 in of walkway on each side of a bed and about 36 in at the foot. With a wall on one long side, a queen air mattress needs about 84 by 116 in of clear floor and a twin about 63 by 111 in. With both sides open, add another 24 in across.

In the example, a home office has a desk along one wall that leaves a clear patch 7 by 10 ft, or 84 by 120 in. The queen goes against the wall: it needs 84 in across, so there is nothing to spare, and 4 in to spare at the foot. The twin needs 63 in across and leaves 21 in. A guest can sleep on either. With the twin there is room to open a suitcase.

For a twin air mattress, put 1 in the frame box: Intex's twin is an inch wider than a twin mattress.Example: Queen fits, 2 in to spare (10 x 10 ft room with walkways)Open the tool

Why the box size and your tape disagree

Intex says its airbeds state the approximate inflated size. To check it, inflate the bed first and measure across the bulge on the side. The size moves with the air pressure and the room temperature, so expect your tape to be off by an inch or so.

Fig. 2The size on the box is the inflated size. The sides bulge, so measure across the widest point, and the height decides how deep the fitted sheet must be.

Height doesn't change the floor space. Intex lists a 14 in queen and an 18 in queen, both 60 by 80 in. Height matters for sheets: Intex says normal sheets work if the pocket is as deep as the airbed.

Blow it up the night before

Intex notes that new vinyl stretches the first few times you use the bed, so it can feel like it's losing air. Inflate it a night early, let it stretch, then top it up before your guest goes to bed.

A made-up guest bed. On the floor, a mattress needs the same walkway around it as one on a frame.

If it doesn't fit

  • Try the twin. It is 21 in narrower than the queen across, and 5 in shorter.
  • Push one long side against the wall and keep only one walkway.
  • Move one piece of furniture out for the visit: the desk chair, a side table, a floor lamp. Measure again.
  • Turn the mattress the other way if the patch is long and narrow. The foot walkway can run along the open side.
  • Use a different room. A living room floor after the coffee table moves is often the biggest clear patch in the house.

Checklist to print

Work through this before the guest arrives:

  • Clear patch of floor measured both ways
  • Room door opened fully; it misses the patch
  • One long side against a wall
  • Air mattress size read off the box or product page
  • Size run through the bed check tool
  • Outlet within reach of the pump cord
  • Rug or blanket down; nothing sharp on the floor
  • Fitted sheet pocket at least as deep as the bed
  • Bed inflated the night before and topped up
  • Box and bag kept for packing it away

Tips and tricks

  • Tip 01

    Tape the outline first

Mark the mattress outline on the floor with painter's tape before the visit. Open the door, pull out the desk chair and walk to the window. You'll see the problems the numbers miss.

  • Tip 02

Lay a rug or blanket under it

Intex says airbeds work best on a solid foundation. A smooth floor, clear of anything sharp, does the job; a rug or blanket also stops the bed from sliding on hardwood.

  • Tip 03

    Find the outlet first

Built-in pumps plug in. Check that the cord reaches from the spot you picked, so you aren't running an extension cord across the walkway.

  • Tip 04

    Buy sheets for the height

Write the mattress height on your measuring sheet. A deep-pocket fitted sheet for a 14 in or 18 in air bed stays on through the night.

  • Tip 05

    Keep the box and bag

Hold on to the box and storage bag until the visit ends. They're where the mattress goes once it's deflated and folded.

What we would do

A queen against the wall if the patch is 7 by 10 ft

If your clear patch is at least 84 by 116 in, a queen against the wall gives a guest the most room, and a couple can share it. Smaller than that, pick the twin and keep the walkway. At 2 a.m., a clear walkway matters more than a few extra inches of bed. Inflate it the night before either way.

Questions

How big is a queen air mattress?

Intex lists its queen air mattresses at 60 by 80 in, the same footprint as a queen bed, in heights such as 14 in and 18 in. Check the box for yours: the maker gives an approximate inflated size.

How much space do I need for a queen air mattress?

With one long side against a wall and Casper's walkways of 24 in at the side and 36 in at the foot, about 84 by 116 in of clear floor. With both sides open, about 108 by 116 in.

Will a twin air mattress fit in a small office?

A twin from Intex is 39 by 75 in. Against a wall it needs about 63 by 111 in of clear floor, which is a patch a little over 5 by 9 ft.

My air mattress measures smaller than the box says. Is it the wrong size?

Probably not. Intex says the box gives the approximate inflated size, which changes with air pressure and room temperature. Measure it fully inflated, across the widest part of the bulge.

Why does a new air mattress feel flat by morning?

Intex says new vinyl stretches the first few times it's used, which feels like a leak. Inflate it the night before your guest arrives and top it up at bedtime.
